About me

My role at the Data Science Institute (DSI):

  • Teaching: I teach Data Science, Mathematics, and Statistics courses at both the University of Chicago and the City Colleges of Chicago.

  • Curriculum Development:
    • Co-authoring and editing University of Chicago’s textbook for introductory data science course sequence: Data 118 and Data 119 (under development). Some of my work includes chapters on Neural Networks and Deep Learning, Introduction to Machine Learning, and DataFrames (in collaboration with Jesse London- Software Engineer, Data Science Institute)
    • Collaborating with Olive-Harvey College (one of the City Colleges of Chicago) to develop and propose a data science course sequence at the community college level.
    • Contributing to development of lab/recitation curriculum as part of a teaching research initiative examining the impact of mandatory lab components on student learning outcomes in introductory data science courses.
  • Professional Development: Participating in ongoing professional development training with Dr. Anne Close at the City Colleges of Chicago. It is a comprehensive faculty development program focused on evidence-based and inclusive teaching practices, classroom action research, and reflective practice in preparation for a career in higher education.

  • Research: Collaborating with Internet Innovation initiative at DSI.

  • Mentoring:
    • Mentoring undergraduate students through the Data Science Clinic, an experiential, project-based course at UChicago.
    • I also mentor students through DSI outreach programs, including the Data Science for Social Impact summer program. This summer (2025), my students developed Seedbot, a chatbot that parses legal documents and answers questions about seed laws from 78 countries in simplified language. Their work has been accepted for poster presentation, with a paper in preparation.
